Nirmalamma - The celluloid granny is no more


Popular character artist, Nirmalamma widely recognized for her plethora roles as a grand mother in films, breathed her last today this morning (19th February) at her residence in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad.

Widely recognized as the most talented actress for her versatility in character roles, she is loved by the audience for her realistic portrayal of mother and grand mother role in the films. With a single pat, any Telugu cinegoer will remember her name as ‘teluginti bamma’.

Born in 1927 in Bandar, she stepped into cinema with 'Garuda Garvabhangam' in 1950. Her production house Nirmala Arts made 'Chalaki Mogudu-Chadasthapu Pellam' starring Rajendra Prasad under the direction of Relangi Narasimha Rao.

Starting with ‘Mayuri’, she bagged many Nandi Awards for Best Supporting Actress and Film Fare Awards in her career. In her late days in cinema, she did films like ‘Shankarabharanam’, ‘Yamagola’, ‘Padaharella Vayasu’, ‘Swathi Muthyam’, ‘Mavi Chiguru’, ‘Subha Sankalpam’ and ‘Premaku Swagatham’ (last film).

In her film career than spanned nearly five decades, Nirmalamma acted in more than 700 films in versatile roles. She has passed away at the age of 89 survived by her adopted daughter Kavitha and her son-in-law Prasad.

Prominent artists Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Murali Mohan, SV Krishna Reddy, K.Achi Reddy, Relangi Narasimha Rao, Sivaparvathi, Maharshi Raghava and others paid their homage to the actor.
